We want to spread ‘joy to the world‘ and celebrate in between the ongoing pandemic chaos. We love nothing more than waking up in the morning and turning on the lights and immediately the house feels warm and cosy. From the traditional Christmas tree to the Christmas dinner, and everything in between, the nation seems to be seeking homely tradition this Christmas season like never before. It is no secret that COVID-19 has had some serious influence over the most traditional trends. We all want to remember back to a time when things were easier…

This year was a big year at Housing Units – after such a dull year, we decided to do something that we have never done before. We were delighted to collaborate with @mrselizabethhome and dress her home ready for the big day! Making this our biggest collaboration yet to date. This weeks blog takes a different approach. We are going to explore life at home with Rachael and her thoughts about our Christmas collaboration. Read on to see how we dressed Rachael’s home and inspiration…

What is your favourite HU Christmas theme and why?

My favourite theme is the festive Joy theme, I love traditional and nostalgic at Christmas!

Which theme would you say gained most interaction & why do you think this was?

I think either the festive Joy or sugar plum sparkle. Lots of people loves reds at Christmas and the pink always looks so pretty!

Did any of the themes surprise you? Was there anything that you typically would not go for, but loved this year?

I wouldn’t typically have gone for the sparkly night theme as I like the lighter colours but it tied in really nicely in my dining area.

What do you think is a must have when dressing your Christmas tree?

I love to have lots of lights and lots of sprays/branches sticking out to make it look fuller.

Do you prefer mixed coloured themes or the subtle tones? Wintery, fluffy Whites were big on social media this year

I like both mixed and subtle tones

Do you prefer multi-coloured lights or plain ones?

I love a really wintery look, lots of sparkle, big snowy looking looks. I love multicoloured at Christmas. I always go for white lights though, however next year I’m thinking of multicoloured. I always had multi coloured growing up and want my kids to see the same.

Feather boas or tinsel?

I love feather boas! I also love tinsel – I don’t really use it though as I’m not quite sure how to dress it with the tinsel!

On a scale of 1-10, how would you rank your festive spirit and why?

Until Sunday my festive spirit was probably a 4. But I booked some carol singers, and got all the neighbours outside on our little cul-de-sac (socially distanced of course!) We had mulled wine (the best mulled wine we’ve ever had from Kobe Coffee!) We are now all a 10! It was brilliant, definitely something we are going to make an annual tradition on our street!

What do you love about Christmas?

I love the build up to Christmas, it’s been different this year. Typically I love to go shopping, we like to eat out and catch up with family, we love a big family get together. I usually love how school and all after school activities stop for two weeks and we have a good rest.

Favourite Christmas outfit?

We spend most our Christmas in our pyjamas and focused around playing with the kids and making memories!

Name three words that best describe Christmas for you

family, memories, food

Where is your favourite place to visit on the run up to Christmas?

We always visit housing units and take the kids to visit Santa there every year, we also love winter Funland!

Do you usually hit the shops or do your shopping online?

Usually I shop both online and got the shops, but this year it’s all been online!

Favourite Christmas food?

Favourite Christmas food, i can’t decide! There’s too much!

Favourite Christmas outfit? dressy or cosy pyjamas

Favourite Christmas outfit, we only get dressed when we go to a party or go out over Christmas, the rest is spent in pyjamas!

Do you have any Christmas traditions? What are they?

We always watch Christmas films in bed together, I have to force the older two kids now but I do make them! We always go and visit great grandparents on Christmas Eve and we will now be making the carol singers a yearly tradition on our street!

What is your favourite Christmas Movie?

I have too many favourite Christmas movies! I can’t name one!! We love most of them! I think Home Alone just never gets old though!

If you could live off one Christmas food, what would it be?

Probably pate on toast! We only seem to buy pate at Christmas!

What typically goes on top of your tree?

One tree has a star on top, the other trees have lots of sprays/twigs/branches

What it your favourite Christmas Song?

I love the home alone soundtrack!

By taking a look into Rachael’s home, we hope to have provided an insight into how you can create a beautifully designed Winter wonderland in your home
